The Queen has been placed under medical supervision at Balmoral Castle after her doctors said they were concerned for her health, Buckingham Palace has announced. The 96-year-old monarch remains at her Scottish residence, the palace said. Her son and heir, Prince Charles, his wife Camilla – the Duchess of Cornwall – and Prince William travelled to be by her side.

The announcement has escalated fears for the monarch’s health.  “Following further evaluation this morning, the Queen’s doctors are concerned for Her Majesty’s health and have recommended she remain under medical supervision,” the palace said. “The Queen remains comfortable and at Balmoral.”

Charles and Camilla were staying nearby at Birkhall on the royal estate and quickly arrived to be with her. A flight carrying members of the royal family landed at Aberdeen airport about 12.50am AEST, ahead of their anticipated arrival at Balmoral. It was carrying William, his uncles Prince Edward and Prince Andrew, and Edward’s wife Sophie, the Countess of Wessex. Prince Harry, who has been staying at Frogmore Cottage in Windsor during a brief European tour would “be travelling to Scotland”, but his wife Meghan would not make the trip, their spokeswoman said.

For most of the year, the Queen has endured ongoing “episodic mobility issues” that are reported to have worsened over the past few weeks. Her condition forced her to break a long-standing tradition on Tuesday by accepting the resignation of Johnson and inviting Liz Truss to form a new government in person at Balmoral, after the palace decided it was unwise for the monarch to travel to London, where the event has traditionally taken place. Her health issues, which she has faced for nearly a year since a brief hospital stay last October, have hampered other occasions too, including her Platinum Jubilee celebrations in June. She also contracted COVID-19 back in February, and later spoke about how it left her feeling “very tired and exhausted”. In July, the Queen was forced to hand over responsibility when Charles and William took centre stage at the state opening of parliament. It was the first time she missed the event in 59 years.

She has been a central part of British life for more than six decades, since the death of her father George VI in 1952. She became Queen when Winston Churchill was in Downing Street, and this week invited Truss to form government, appointing the 15th prime minister of her reign.

Charles has reportedly been making regular morning visits to see his mother as she has struggled with her mobility – the unplanned visits are considered highly unusual.

Keeping her and her family in my thoughts <3 Apparently the palace very rarely discusses the queen's health so the fact they're saying anything is making a lot of people worry these could be her last days. At the same time, they're only talking about mobility issues as of now so it's possible she could still have a few years left in her. Sending lots of love her way and I hope she's happy and surrounded by her loved ones <3
