In a 24-minute statement against the conservatorship she’s lived under for 13 years, Britney Spears sounded off before a Los Angeles probate judge Brenda Penny on Wednesday, saying that she wants to sue her family and that she was “abused” by a previous therapist, among multiple other accusations.

“I’ve been in shock. I am traumatized,” she said, during a hearing that was livestreamed to the media by the court. “I just want my life back.” She said she wants the conservatorship, which she feels is “abusive,” to end “without having to be evaluated.”

She also said when she said she was okay in Instagram posts she shared over the past year, “I was in denial.”

Shortly after her statement, the court recessed, and after its return, the transmission was stopped.

Wednesday’s hearing came after years of near-silence on the issue from the singer, although the New York Times published a report earlier this week citing private legal documents that state she has been trying to end the conservatorship for several years, citing mismanagement by her father and the extreme legal costs involved.

A lightly edited transcript of Britney Spears’ statement follows. It includes run-on sentences and unclear statements, but the context seems relevant:

Poor Britney. :( It must have taken a lot of bravery to get up in court and be so vulnerable like that.

No matter what anyone thinks about her mental state or the conservatorship, I don't see how anyone can justify having her dad as the sole conservator or not letting her choose her own lawyers or therapists or having a right to control her own pregnancies.

Honestly, I know she doesn't want to do the psychological assessment, but I hope she's able to do it and get a clear result so they can end the conservatorship once and for all. If not, I hope they're able to provide her with a new conservator who isn't related to her and isn't trying to take advantage of her.

This is so sad, someway her music was part of my life as a kid, it's truly awful, hope she'll get rid of that damn conservatoship and find someone who truly cares about her health.

Thank you for sharing the audio! I was thinking when I read this it would be a lot more powerful coming from her mouth and I wasn't wrong. I don't think I understood how pissed off she was just reading the text. Just reading the text, I was kind of nervous she might be rambling a bit but it makes sense she was getting flustered in such a horrible situation. I'm proud of her and praying for her <3

This is so sad! Just let her live her life, I don't get why that's such a difficult concept. Her asshole of a father is straight up extorting money from her and using her name as a brand. smh.

So incredibly sad but I'm glad Britney has been able to speak out in her own words and that it's on record at her request.

I remember being very sceptical in 2019 when things started to erupt again after the voicemail received by the Britney's Gram podcast was shared because the way things were unfolding reminded me of a time no fan wants to repeat and I still have a problem with the way some people behaved under the guise of concern for Britney's wellbeing - specifically those who swarmed her Instagram comments with unhelpful remarks or just used the situation to create clout-chasing content on TikTok - but through that year and with each revelation that has come since there's just no way to remain neutral on this.

Her conservators and the systems that have kept it in place can't hide from scrutiny any longer and I hope this is a turning point for Britney. I suspect this is going to continue for some time yet though I hope we start to see some indication that steps are being taken to begin honouring what Britney wants soon!

I agree totally. The annoying 13 year olds on Instagram who have never listened to a Britney song but take the opportunity to criticise her dancing or tell her to wash her hair are gross
