Two explosions shook Istanbul’s main airport on Tuesday evening, and at least 11 people were killed and 36 wounded, Turkish officials said.

Turkish officials told Reuters that suspects blew themselves up before passing the x-ray security check. Separately, an official told the Associated Press it was unclear whether the explosions were caused by bombs or a suicide attack.

Witnesses and Turkish media reported that gunfire was heard. Local television outlets broadcast images of soldiers armed with assault rifles entering the Ataturk airport. A witness told CNN Turk that injured people were being taken away in taxis, Reuters reported.

Turkey has been rocked by a series of bombings in recent months. Officials have variously blamed Kurdish separatists or Islamic State militants for the attacks.
