Kehlani & Hayley Kiyoko Attack Rita Ora For 'Girls'

    Kehlani.jpg

Rita Ora recently released the third single for her long awaited second album 'Girls', and not everyone is happy about it.

'Girls', which is a collaboration with Cardi B, Bebe Rexha and Charli XCX, is an ode to girls kissing girls, with a chorus that reads, "Sometimes I just wanna kiss girls/Red wine, I just wanna kiss girls". The song, which Ora has described as an "empowering anthem", seems to be as much a celebration of femininity in general as it is about actually falling in love with girls. "These past few years I've been so inspired by all the strong women I've seen who aren't afraid to be themselves. For those who aren’t afraid to rule the world, this is our anthem," she said. "And of course, thank you to all the fellow boss women who so kindly graced this song with me — each representing who they are and where they are from."

Despite Ora's words, however, it seems that not everyone has taken the song in the vein in which it was intended. Kehlani (aka the girl famous for attempting suicide) and Hayley Kiyoko (aka the girl from The Stunners who isn't Tinashe) both took to Twitter today to express their dissatisfaction with the song, with both artists appearing to think that the song set the LGBTQ community back by years.

In typical SJW fashion, Kehlani made a series of Tweets that were not only vague and incomprehensible but also pretentious and holier than thou.

"every artist on the song is fantastic, and very much loved and supported by me… by all of us. but this isn’t about talent. it’s about choice," she stated. When a follower pointed out that she'd written a similarly themed song called 'Distraction', she seemed to state that she was above criticism. "let’s get into it my love. i didn’t write distraction about needing a woman to be a distraction because i wouldn’t take a woman seriously because i am not queer. i wrote about wanting a distraction from my career, but not having enough time for a relationship. and don’t make this personal."

In a lengthy Twitter tirade, Kiyoko echoed Kehlani's statements in a similarly obnoxious tone.

    Quote

It’s important for us artists to use our platforms to move the cultural needle forward, not backwards. There is a new song that came out today featuring a handful of well-known pop artists that has me overwhelmed with thoughts. I literally have a knot in my stomach right now. To be clear, I fully support other artists who freely express themselves and applaud male and female artists who are opening up more and more about their sexual identities.

But ever so often there come certain song with messaging that is just downright tone-deaf, which does more harm than good for the LGBTQ+ community. A song like this just fuels the male gaze while marginalizing the idea of women loving women.

I know this wasn’t the intention of the artists on the song, but its the lack of consideration behind these lyrics that really get me. I don’t need to drink wine to kiss girls; I’ve loved women my entire life. This type of message is dangerous because it completely belittles and invalidates the very pure feelings of an entire community. I feel I have a responsibility to protect that whenever possible.

We can and should do better.

As someone who was pretty against Katy Perry's 'I Kissed A Girl', I have to say that for me the only offensive thing about 'Girls' is the quality of the lyrics. But what do you think? Check out the song and sound off below!

I don't do Twitter, so I am taking your word that they actually said all that.  But if true?

I have 4 things to say to "Kehlani & Hayley Kiyoko"........And that is:

    S.T.F.U.

It's just a freaking song.  Get over yourselves.  I like the song, and I will listen to it as often as I want to.

People get triggered over some crazy A$$ $hit.

    I love this part:

" I fully support other artists who freely express themselves..."  She should have added..."unless I do not agree with what they say". "At that point, my support ends".

If Rita wants to kiss girls.  I say....go for it girl.  And if it takes a little wine to get up the courage..Maybe she's just shy -LOL- (by the way I don't think that is what is meant by that line).  But that is just my opinion, as I really have no idea what she was thinking when those lyrics were written.  And neither does "Kehlani & Hayley Kiyoko".

So Again.  I say to "Kehlani & Hayley Kiyoko":

    S.T.F.U.

This is so unnecessary. If Rita wants to drink red wine and kiss girls, then she should go for it :vacuum: I don't see how bisexual women singing about their own experiences enforces stereotypes.. SJW's will do anything to find a way to victimize themselves. I'm bisexual myself and I don't see a problem. They need to get a grip :morning:

    ?‍♂️?

SJW's.  LMFAO.  I love it.  I was going to use that in my comments.  But I was being nice, as I did not want offend the SJW's.  If I was not sitting on the toilet right now, I would be rolling on the floor.

P.S.  ignore the amoji's up top.  Hit them by mistake.  And I could not delete them.

I knew that some mess like this would happen :cackle: I see their point and i think it's all bullshit. Like @Eclipse said perfectly, if the girls want to sing about an experience with another women because of a drink i don't see what's the problem tbh... I don't understand why they feel attacked by it, the fact that anyone would sleep with someone of the same sex because of a wine won't make Hayley or Kehlani less lesbian/bissexual. I agree that bisexuality is not well represented even in the LGBTQ+ circle but i don't see how this song would be harmful. Those bitches are just thirsty for retweets. I can't stand this Hayley girl, she acts like she invented lesbianism.

It’s important for us #PHFaggots to use our platforms to move the cultural needle forward, not backwards. There are some new comments that came out today featuring a handful of well-known posters named @Whoknowsmehere, @Eclipse and @victorxcx that have me overwhelmed with thoughts. I literally have a knot in my stomach right now. To be clear, I fully support other #PHFaggots who freely express themselves and applaud male and female posters who are opening up more and more about their opinions.

But every so often there come certain comments with messaging that is just downright tone-deaf, which does more harm than good for the PHF community. Posts like this claim that it is okay to drink wine, when in reality the normalisation of alcohol in today's society is a growing issue.

I know this wasn’t the intention of the posters, but its the lack of consideration behind these posts that really get me. As an alcoholic, I avoid alcohol; and because that's a lifestyle I choose, I think that everyone else in the world has to choose it too. This type of message is dangerous because it completely belittles and invalidates the very pure feelings of the entire Alcoholics Anonymous community. I feel I have a responsibility to protect that whenever possible.

We can and should do better.

Countess my friend.  I totally respect your opinions and I completely understand your feelings and reasons for feeling how you feel.  I know first hand the effects that alcoholism can and does have on the individual and the people around them.  I have been effected in numerous ways from the effects of this addiction.  As I am sure that many others here on PHF have.

However.  I do not see anywhere in my comments where I made reference to or in any way made derogatory remarks towards anyone who may or may not be addicted or have been affected by alcoholism.  And I am sorry you may have interpreted it that way.  And believe my when I say I am sorry you have gone through what you have gone through with alcohol.

If I read the original post correctly what it pertained to was Rita Ora using this particular song to talk about her bisexuality.  And the fact that she said or implied that she drank wine has nothing to do with alcoholism.  At least the way I interpret it.  I could be wrong.  In full disclosure I personally do not drink alcohol in any capacity.  Have I before?  Yes.  However I chose at an early age, perhaps due to how this particular addiction has affected certain members of my immediate family.  Or it could be that I just cannot stand the taste.  I won't go into specifics, but there have been many in my family who have or have had issues with not only alcohol but also drugs.  Which I choose to not partake of as well.   And they have not always ended well.

This is one of the reasons up to this point here on PHF I have not made any comments on social issues.  Hot button issues such as this can and often do cause people who truly like and respect each other. And my friend, I truly do respect you, like you, and respect your opinions very much.  And as someone who in real life is a very opinionated person, I do tend to rile others up.

    Having said that:

I am sincerely sorry if what I said affected you negatively.  The fact that you felt the need to say what you said.  Whether what I said was wrong or not, I will leave up to each person to decide that for themselves.  What does matters is that someone I like and respect was troubled enough to feel the need to speak up.

Keep up the great work you are doing here on PHF and I hope that this does not effect us in the future.

I like how this went from people writing their opinions to making fun of that statement :cackle:

I just have to say that, if Kehlani was known for attempting suicide... she didn't actually give a good impression either, am I wRoNg? (pun intended, Zayn). And Hayley. I just can't even (I don't get why people like her music, it seems too common to my taste, but anyways, not the point here). Honestly, I don't see a bad thing on it. I guess everybody should just take the song as it is, a song. If it deals with alcohol, damn, everybody should know the consequences and decide whether if drinking or not. I don't drink, don't deal with drugs, don't smoke... guys, if I love Lana, I wouldn't "get high on hydroponic weed" just because she sings it. Therefore, if Rita Ora sings she wishes to drink red wine... she does it. It doesn't mean every listener must do what she sings. Songs, in their purest meaning, are poems, aka, figurative. I understand that Rita sings about getting out at parties and have fun, not specifically to become an alcoholic. But well... everybody has their opinions, and that was mine. Just chill. And enjoy the music, since I don't think Rita is releasing anything else before Q4.

Oh honey, please don't take me seriously! :fishie: I feel bad for making you write all those paragraphs and for you thinking I'm legitimately mad at you! All I was doing was copying Hayley's overly dramatic statement from the original post and parodying it in my own way. :yeah: No harm intended at all!

On another note, kudos to you for staying sober for so long! ;) A lot of my family members struggle with drug and alcohol addiction as well so it's something I've tried my best to manage and not let get out of control. Congrats to you for staying strong and sticking to your guns. <3

I honestly don't even think Kehlani is bisexual so I have no idea what she's doing judging other bisexual women and sticking up for a "community" she doesn't even belong in... :cackle: You're so right about how literally people take songs. It's funny that movies never really get that criticism - people can go to war, murder people, rape people, and blow up entire cities in movies and it's fine but if someone sings about something like that in songs people drag them. People need to get over themselves, sip some red wine, kiss a girl and chill the fuck out.
